UMN Ecology Building Waterproofing
This project addressed long-standing water infiltration in the tunnels and stair towers connecting the University’s Ecology Building, McNeal Hall, and Borlaug Hall. Scope included comprehensive waterproofing using hot fluid-applied rubberized asphalt, masonry repairs with tuckpointing and new flashing, and replacement of the Borlaug Hall green roof with a built-up roof and sheet metal. Site improvements included curbs, gutters, drives, railings, lighting, and landscaping. Multiple phases were required due to unforeseen soil conditions, heavy rain, and weight restrictions on the tunnels, which limited equipment access. Careful coordination protected mature trees, maintained safe access, and accommodated campus operations. Investigative work, hydrovac excavation, and structural analysis ensured safe excavation and storm drain access while restoring long-term building envelope performance.
